Zetia is a cholesterol-lowering medicine. It reduces the amount of cholesterol (a type of fat) absorbed by the body and blocks the production of more cholesterol. Zetia lowers "bad" cholesterol in the blood (also called LDL, or low-density lipoprotein) and raises "good" cholesterol (also called HDL, or high-density lipoprotein). It works by blocking an enzyme that is necessary for your body to make cholesterol.

Zetia is only a part of complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, weight control etc. Keeping your cholesterol level under control may reduce your risk of heart problems and stroke. Note that Vytorin is not a cure for high cholesterol, but a mean to control it.

How Taken:

Take Zetia exactly as it was prescribed. It can be taken once a day with or with out food, preferrably - at the same time every day.

It may take up to several weeks of using the medication before the cholesterol level improves. Do not give this medication to children younger than 10 years old!

Missed Dose:

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose! If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one.

Overdose::

If you think you have used too much of Zetia, it's better to seek for emergency medical attention. Though, overdose of it shouldn't produce life-threatening symptoms.

Storage::

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Side Efeects::

If you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat - stop using Zetia and call emergency.

Other serious effects can be: muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness with fever or flu symptoms and dark colored urine; decreased urine or rust-colored urine; blurred vision.

Less serious side effects (it is recommended to call your doctor): stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea; cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose; tiredness; headache; skin rash or itching; joint pain, back pain; insomnia.
